The Beat goes on with Jack Coutts
As Chair of Liverpool Dementia Action Alliance I've been an admirer of MDFR from the beginning and when Nat said he was looking for new presenters I thought "I could do that !" and that it would be fun, which it is.
Tell us a little about your show.
I chose the title "The Beat Goes On" and the theme of pop and rock sounds of the 60s and 70s because that's my musical happy place. These were my teenage and early twenties years and I still love the music of the period. Each show I try to select tracks based on a topic, sometimes fairly loose, to give some relationship between the tracks and add a bit of interest but not too serious. I hope listeners will find plenty that's familiar and enjoyable and the occasional surprise or oddity.
Favourite song or first song you bought?
Wow, that's a hard one. I think the first single I bought would have been The Beatles' "She Loves You" when it came out. My favourite song is almost impossible to pick - so many different ones for different reasons, associated with memories of the period as well as musical appreciation. If we come down to the Desert Island Discs moment of the only one I'd choose to be left with I'd probably have to go with Carrie from Joni Mitchell's "Blue" album
My best musical experience would have to be seeing the US band Love in Liverpool a few years ago, faithfully playing all the tracks from their classic 1967 album Forever Changes . The band personnel is mainly newish members but with one of the original line-up still there so there was a hint of authenticity, not just a tribute act.
