Hits and Headlines with Kevin Smith
Why did you get involved with Merseyside Dementia Friendly Radio?
I’ve always believed music is memory’s best time-machine. I’d seen how a familiar tune could light up someone living with dementia—suddenly they’re tapping their foot and telling you a story from fifty years ago. When MDFR came along it felt like the perfect way to use my broadcasting skills to help engage those moments for listeners and their families.
Tell me a little about your show.
I present Hits & Headlines on a Tuesday morning at 11 am which is basically a musical TARDIS. I select a year, play the songs, and sprinkle in the news, TV and pop-culture nuggets that shaped that moment—there's a few laughs along the way, It’s nostalgia that'll put a smile on your face.
Favourite song or first song you bought?
The first single I ever shelled out for was “January” by Pilot. I can still picture myself marching home from Woolworths with that 7-inch like I’d just discovered gold, it cost me all of my pocket money.
What is your best musical experience?
This one always makes me giggle, when I was at junior school in the mid 70s, my friends all dressed up and mimed to the Bay City Rollers singing bye bye baby (Badly) for part of the Christmas panto.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That's easy...chicken curry either with chips or rice, I'm not fussed, but there has to be a large serving of curry.
